An Off-Road Icon Revived

The long-awaited return of the Land Rover Defender is upon us. Originally introduced in 1983 and reaching availability in North America in 1990, this model was an instant success. However, this iconic SUV hasn’t been available on the North American market since 1997, and it ceased production overseas in 2016. However, it is ready to make its triumphant return worldwide, and you can experience it today at Land Rover St. Petersburg.

The all-new 2020 Defender pays homage to its beginnings. Before the model line was renamed to the “Defender” in 1990, it went by the names “Land Rover 90”, which had a 93-inch wheel base, and “Land Rover 110”, which had a 110-inch wheel base. The 2020 model features 2 distinct body styles, and to keep with tradition, Land Rover dubbed them “90” and “110”.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender can seat 5, 6 or 7 passengers, depending on its body style and how you configure it. With the 90 body style, the 2020 Defender seats either 5 or 6 passengers. Meanwhile, the 110 body style ordinarily accommodates 5 adults but has a small folding third row that can comfortably seat 2 children when set upright.

Car shoppers can find the 2020 Defender in 5 well-equipped trim levels — Defender, S, SE, HSE and X. Plus, 90 First Edition and 110 First Edition models are also available.

Conquer Any Terrain

The 2020 Land Rover Defender was built for those who live on the edge. Featuring standard all-wheel drive, it can tackle just about every terrain — no matter how rough, slippery or daunting it may be. Plus, it comes with the world’s first Configurable Terrain Response technology, which uses smart systems to analyze your current driving conditions and respond to it with the best-suited powertrain steering, traction controls and differentials settings.

This SUV is so capable that it’s not even beholden to land, as it has the potential to wade up to a depth of 900 mm. Best of all, there’s no guesswork involved while you’re attempting to cross water thanks to its 3D Surround Camera. This feature comes with Wade Sensing technology, which informs you of the water depth surrounding your vehicle.

A Host Of Innovative Powertrain Options

While some rivals are content with offering simple 4-cylinder or V6 engines, Land Rover took a more innovative approach. The 2020 Defender gives you the choice between petrol and diesel options, and a plug-in hybrid option will be arriving in the near future.

A 2.0L twin turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder engine comes standard, and it offers a max speed of 109 MPH and a max towing capacity of 3,500 kg. An enhanced turbo diesel engine is also available for those who desire even more performance. Meanwhile, the 2020 Defender also has a pair of available petrol engines — a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder. The 2.0L turbo reaches a top speed of 119 MPH and accelerates from 0-60 MPH in just 7.7 seconds, but the 3.0L turbo takes everything to the next level. It achieves a 0-60 MPH time of 5.8 seconds, which is an astounding number for such a rugged SUV.

Technology, Comfort & Protection

Capability is an essential part of any Land Rover, but so is comfort. The 2020 Defender doesn’t fall short in either aspect. It comes equipped with comfortable, yet durable materials like leather seats with Robust Woven Textile, which help reduce wear and tear. Meanwhile, its rubber flooring makes for easy clean-up, and much of its interior is finished with a highly durable textured powder coat to protect from damage.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender also keeps you well connected with its Pivi Pro infotainment system, which houses your calling, messaging, music and navigation features. Plus, you can enhance your driving experience with other high-tech features like an optional Head-Up Display, Connected Navigation Pro, Wireless Device Charging and much more.

Innovation extends to protection as well. The 2020 Defender’s optional Driver Assist Pack features Adaptive Cruise Control and Rear Pre-Collision Monitor. Meanwhile, the Blind Spot Assist Pack comes with Cler Exit Monitor, Rear Traffic Monitor and, of course, Blind Spot Assist.
